Dolly Rebecca Parton
Dolly Rebecca Parton was born on the
19th of January 1946 in Pittman Center, Tennessee and was raised in
Sevierville, Tennessee to Avie Lee Parton, a housewife and Robert Lee Parton, a
tobacco farmer. She appeared on Knoxville TV at 12 years old. At 13, she was
recording for an obscure label, and was performing on the Grand Ole Opry. She
graduated high school in 1964 before moving to Nashville to begin her country
singing journey. Carl Dean, an asphalt-paving businessman, fell in love with
her and they were married on May 30 in 1966. Porter Wagoner saw her singing and
asked her to be a guest on The Porter Wagoner Show (1961). She stayed with The
Porter Wagoner Show for seven years. Their duets became well-known and she was
invited to perform with him at the Grand Ole Opry. Her biggest hit
"Joshua" was released at the top spot in 1970 was her biggest hit
single. She made the decision to go on her own while she recorded duets with
him. She was no longer with him and began her solo career in 1974. Dolly was a massive
success as a singer/songwriter. Dolly was honored with many Country Music
Association awards (1968-1971 1971, 1975-1976 and 1975-1976). She was a petite
(5'0") beauty who was an ideal choice for television. In the early 1970s,
Dolly appeared on a variety of talk-shows and TV specials prior to being given
her own show Dolly (1976). Dolly got her first Grammy award for Best Female
Country Vocal Performance in 1977 for "Here You Come Again". Dolly's
first movie appearance was in the movie 9-to-5 (1980) and she received an Oscar
nomination for the title of her song and Grammy awards 2 and 3. She also
received Grammy awards 2, and 3. Best Country Song and Best Female Country
Vocal Performance, for the track "Nine to Five." Her most memorable roles
were in The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas (1982) and Rhinestone (1984) in
which she sang "Tennessee Homesick Blues". She is the head of Dolly
Parton Enterprises, a $100 million media empire and in 1986 she created
Dollywood A theme park located in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee, in celebration of
her Smoky Mountain upbringing. She appeared as herself in Dolly, the Dolly
(1987) television show. In the episode "Trio" she won the Best
Country Performance Duo or Group with Vocals Grammy in 1988.
